Recover. Reconnect.
Tamariki and whānau are safe, recover from past trauma, reconnect with each other and create a positive future.
Our services include our nationwide Stand for Children Service (which is inclusive of the therapeutic care and education component delivered in our children's villages) therapeutic social work services delivered in home based and school based settings, family therapy, and a holiday programme for caregivers, including grandparents and foster parents.
Our community and school social workers have many years of experience providing individualised support to children and families who have complex needs and family structures.
Programmes provided by Stand Stand Tū Māia include Family Development Programmes such as Te Puawai, Keeping the Magic Going, Stepping Out and Family Return on Investment (Family ROI).
Programmes for children and young people include our Therapeutic Care and Education (children's villages), KidzaCool Adventures, Theraplay, Sunshine Circles, Circle of Courage, Seasons for Growth, Storm Birds, Journey of Hope and a variety of other programmes that address the individual health, education and social needs of children.
Our Approach
The daily focus of our work is to protect children from further trauma, support their recovery and enhance their wellbeing. Three principles underpin our approach:
- Harm caused by relationships is best healed by relationships.
- That a child’s home and family, school and teachers, neighbourhood and friends all play a critical role in a child’s world and each system requires attention to improve a child’s quality of life.
- Transformative environments that provide therapeutic relationships and experiences of belonging, mastery, independence and generosity are quicker and more effective for a child’s journey of recovery.
These principles are fully supported by recent brain science discoveries and the evidence base of multisystemic therapy and the therapeutic community movement.
Our Services
We know that some of the children referred to us today will not successfully recover without a planned and consistent therapeutic environment. They need to experience profound healing relationships, and see that everyone is working together to get to the heart of their difficulties in the context of everyday life, school and community. Our Children’s Villages provide this transformative experience.
Planned environments like our Children’s Villages are often referred to as ‘therapeutic communities’. In our Children’s Villages we strive to operate a model based on the principles of therapeutic community life where the care culture is intrinsically linked with the education culture. The provision of effective psycho-social support and therapeutic education requires that our community and residential social workers and teachers plan and work closely together in an integrated model of therapeutic intervention.
Stand Tū Māia is committed to continuing to provide therapeutic residential care and education component of our service and we continue to work hard to ensure this model of therapeutic intervention is safe, effective and sustainable.

The journey of a child and family within the Intensive Family Wraparound Service (IFWS) unfolds in three stages. The stages are similar to the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly. The Monarch butterfly is a chiefly butterfly in Te Ao Māori (the Māori world) and is called the Kākahu. Stand Tū Māia has chosen the Kākahu to represent and acknowledge the paramountcy of the child in our organisation.

Stand Tū Māia now offers a Family Therapy Service. The focus of the new service is to provide a response to protect the most vulnerable children/young people aged 0 to 18 years of age (including unborns) from further maltreatment/exposure to chronic trauma, and to support their recovery from that exposure and enhance their wellbeing.

The vision of the Social Services in Schools is to “enhance life outcomes for children whose social and family circumstances place at risk their chances of achieving good education, social and health outcomes.” Stand Tū Māia provides the service in the Christchurch city region. Social Services in Schools are assigned to clusters of schools in each area and work closely with the schools and other agencies. The service is available to primary, intermediate and secondary schools.

Quality support and respite for kin/whanau/foster carers.
Our KidzaCool Adventures programme gives children the opportunity to play and relax in a fun, safe and sociable environment while kin/whanau/foster carers work, relax or catch up with friends and family. We like to think we offer kin/whanau/foster carers peace of mind while offering children, aged 5-12, a piece of the action!! The programme is a free service for caregivers. Please note, to apply you must have had the child in your care for the last 12 months and not be the biological or adoptive parents.

Our social workers complete a full family assessment that ensures the needs of the child can be met within the context of their family/whanau. We provide service brokerage and coordination for the child and family, often engaging the Strengthening Families process, as well as providing specific family development programmes and parent education alongside the work with the child. These can be delivered in the home, residential at our children’s village, one-on-one or in groups.

Theraplay is a child and family therapy for building and enhancing attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and joyful engagement. It is based on the natural patterns of playful, healthy interaction between parent and child and is personal, physical, and fun. Theraplay interactions focus on four essential qualities found in parent-child relationships: Structure, Engagement, Nurture, and Challenge. Theraplay sessions create an active, emotional connection between the child and parent or caregiver, resulting in a changed view of the self as worthy and lovable and of relationships as positive and rewarding.

The wonderful sound of children laughing usually means they are happy, healthy and contented. We owe it to our children to help them stay healthy and happy. That is why Rotary has established the Healthy Heroes programme, so that all children can build habits of life that will help them have happy, healthy futures. Stand Tū Māia partnered with Rotary to promote the programme nationally. We participate in the delivery of the programme in Christchurch and Wellington. Healthy Heroes is a simple, easy-to-follow home health programme for 8 to 12 year olds. There are five challenges for them to respond to each day, that promote good health and help protect them against obesity and type 2 diabetes.
The Children’s Village in CHRISTCHURCH is situated at 23 Glenelg Spur St Martins Christchurch. Our Village overlooks the City of Christchurch with a panoramic view of the stunning Southern Alps, the City of Christchurch and the Kaikoura Coastline.
STAND For Children Christchurch provides for children and families living in the greater Christchurch region, including down to Timaru in the South, The West Coast and Buller, North Canterbury, and the Nelson, Blenheim, Marlborough areas.
Our stunning purpose-built facility includes an exciting home and school environment with great views and a family development unit complete with separate accommodation.
The purpose of this building is amply reflected in the name we give it today: Te Ao Marama- the light of a new dawn. It symbolises the new start offered to the children and families who stay here and the aspirations of Stand Children’s Services for the children and families they support – to walk alongside them out of the darkness into the “light”.
Our range of activities and adventures include hiking, biking, fishing, surfboarding, kayaking, cultural and educational visits to venues of significance, skateboard and roller blades, music and drama, Kapa Haka, big screen movies, are included in the programme.
Usually you will stay with us for up to five weeks at a time and can return for further stays. The length and structure of a child’s stay can be very flexible and children can still attend important family events, sports practise, church, etc.
The children’s houses are arranged in age and gender; we have three houses which can each accommodate up to eight boys or eight girls. You will have your own bed space complete with cupboards, drawers and a display area for photographs, certificates and awards that you will earn, while staying with us. Children are encouraged to bring a special toy with them, photos of the family/whanau, and other treasures that will allow you to feel comfortable.
Working with the team at the Children’s Village will be a really positive time and a great deal of fun, but there is also some work for you to do! Your work will aim to achieve whatever is in your careplan that your social worker puts together with you and your family.
We will also be expecting that you learn how to look after yourself, respect others and your environment, use your manners, develop values and learn to make choices for yourself.
You will have opportunities to learn about your family, staying in control of you, making friends, mastering some new skills, showing your talents and strengths, making wise choices and thinking for yourself, and being able to care for others and give them a helping hand.
You will also come into contact with some awesome role models in our team and they will be encouraging you to trust, learn, make positive choices and friendships, give what you can to others and make the most of you and your life.
You will also be expected to continue and work hard with your school learning but no homework! – hurray!
The Children’s Village has an awesome teaching team, with small class sizes and this should help you catch up on lots of school work or extend you if you are already up to your right level. We have great interactive technology and lots of computers that you will get to use every day.
We always celebrate birthdays and depending on the time of year we also try to celebrate what is happening in the community such as Easter, Guy Fawkes, Christmas, and Matariki.
We also have a programme for Mums, Dads and other Caregivers. This aims to help them build their skills in looking after you. So while you are at the Children’s Village they will be doing some work as well!
We also work with a lot of other “family helpers” who will support your family during your journey with us. Help with school, help for mum and dad, help with money and housing are all examples of the other support services we can connect your family with. While you are doing your work we will work with the adults in your life to get what they need so they can take better care of you so that together you can be a strong and caring family.
Nearly all of the kids who come to the Children’s Village have a great time and some are even sad when it is time to leave us to go home. If you agree to come to Camp, and yesyou have a choice in this, you are guaranteed a fun programme that will be enjoyable and will also challenge you. Your staff will help you with all the challenges that we put before you during your stay and we hope that you will enjoy this supportive way of working together to help you achieve the best that you can.
