We are a community-based Centre that focuses on enabling community development and growth through the provision of community-led groups and projects for people to gain and become empowered for a better quality of life within our community.

On April 1st, 2023, we transitioned to the Rowley Community Centre Charitable Trust., where our vision, mission and purposes remain steadfast. This new status as a Registered Trust has opened up more opportunities for growth and community impact.

We provide a range of services from supporting families through the use of a Community Development Worker to assisting with resourcing and supports, through to the free use of phone, computers & internet access, photocopier and scanner. We are a Centre where you can just come in relax, read the paper, have a chat and grab yourself a cup of tea or coffee and meet others. We have a wonderful team of volunteers who support us in a variety of ways, from maintaining our beautiful gardens and lawns to assisting with supervision of our Stone Carving, Community Shed, Adult literacy and numeracy classes. We have a range of courses available and a Fruit & Veggie Hub for cheap vegetables through the Veggie Co-op, that is a volunteer community initiative established in Sydenham and supplies to hubs throughout Christchurch.

The aims of the Centre are to:

  • To provide community education, learning programmes and educational resources focused on community participation.

  • Identify and initiate responses to community needs, local issues and local community development initiatives

  • Provide a welcoming safe, secure and accessible venue with appropriately trained support people.

  • Continually develop ways of promoting and enhancing a sense of community

  • To work towards the health, happiness, self-reliance, self-confidence, dignity and independence of those in the local community foster and promote acceptance of all culture in the community.

The Rowley Community Centre operates because of funding from a number of different community organizations. All funding has to be applied for, and the operation of the Centre and activities offered are dependent on this funding.
